NORTH TABLE MOUNTAIN
My "pre-season warm up" took place in the heart of Golden, just 25 minutes west of Denver. Aptly named for its history as a gold rush town, I also attribute it to the morning glow of its mountainous backdrop at sunrise. Golden sits at the foothills of the Rockies, nestled in between North and South Table Mountain--impressive mesas that were formed from lava flows 60 million years ago. Today, North Table Mountain Park offers panoramic views of the Golden valley, 15-plus miles of trails, and breath-taking rock climbing.
Among the vast network of trails, I opted for a short and sweet 3-mile loop. Starting at the west trailhead, the North Table Loop trail opens up to a steep, half-mile climb to the top of the mesa. From there, the paths level off, allowing easy access to Lichen Peak at 6,552'.

I followed the Tilting Mesa trail for about a mile, then took the Mesa Top trail back to North Table Loop. Wildflowers and rattlesnakes are two things to make note of in this area!

From there, Chimney Rock Trail winds through dense forest.

The final quarter mile quickly descends via switchbacks along Elk Falls Trail. Visitors have been able to admire Elk Falls from a distant overlook since the park opened in 2013, but newly constructed trails allow you to experience the 75-foot falls up close.

STAUNTON STATE PARK
Staunton State Park is located 45 minutes southwest of Denver, just past Conifer. Its varied geology and climate support rare and diverse plant/wildlife communities, and provide a myriad of outdoor recreation opportunities--hiking, biking, climbing, fishing, horseback riding, etc.

My friend, Jake, and I beat the weekend rush by arriving around 8am on Saturday. The hike to Elk Falls is a long but mostly flat trip with an elevation gain of 1500' (peak 8,950'). We set off along Staunton Ranch Trail for three miles of beautiful scenery.

We arrived at Elk Falls Pond to learn that marmots call this territory home.

After spending a long while hypnotized by the majestic cascade, Jake and I headed back along the same route, clocking 12 miles in about 5 hours. I was extremely impressed by Colorado's newest state park. From its friendly rangers and volunteers to the well-maintained trail system, I am eager to return for future adventures.
RED ROCKS
Despite the recent heat wave (90-plus degrees), I made it to Red Rocks for an intense morning workout!
